How Sound is Long Island Sound?

 A Webquest Adventure

Introduction:

The Long Island Sound has a great deal to offer, but it also experiences enormous stresses to its environment. Toxins, patholgens, and floatable debris enter the Long Island Sound and have a profound impact on it. In addition, plastics, styrofoam, aluminum cans, cigarette butts and other trash are also swept up and carried into our waterways. Once there, they are harmful and even fatal to marine animals and marine mammals that ingest or become entagled in the floatable debris. We all have a vested interest in the future of the Sound. Some of us enjoy fishing or dining on fish and shellfish; others enjoy the challenges of boating on this wonderful body of water. Since we all have an interest, we all have the responsibility to help keep it clean!

Task:

You are an student environmentalist employed by the "Save the Sound" foundation. You are specializing in preserving our oceans. You will concentrate on the Long Island Sound; a wonderful Estuary right in our own backyards!

There is so much to see and do along the Long Island Sound. You will inform your classmates and the public about the many things one can do and discover 'traveling' around the Sound. In addition, you will also inform others about about the growing concern about pollution found in Sound waters. Pollution effects life in the ocean and that ultimately effects the land. Pollution is clearly an important issue for all organisms inhabiting our planet.

Your job, as a student environmentalist, is to inform your classmates about the beauty and wonders found along the Long Island Sound. You will inform society on the effects of pollution on our Long Island Sound as well as pollution prevention. People need to be educated. The "Save the Sound" foundation is counting on your help to inform the public about the beauty and usefulness of the sound waters and to provide the ways on how to save it from further destruction and preserve it for future generations. Note some of the everyday pollutants that find ways into the waters directly or indirectly. (You may be shocked when you learn about some of the products we use on a daily basis!)

Your goal is to create a tri-fold brochure that will be put on display for your classmates . Your job is to become 'informed' about the Long Island Sound and to educate your classmates and the public. Your brochure will be used as a handout for the "Save the Sound" foundation to educate society.

Use the web sites listed in the Resource section to gather your information. Use them also to help you complete the worksheet. The worksheet is a guide to follow on what the "Save the Sound" foundation wants on each section of the brochure.

Then create a tri-fold brochure using all the information you gather. In the brochure you will include such things as:

Process:

There are three main phases to this project:

Phase 1. Choose a partner. Find someone with whom you work well.

Phase 2. Research information about a real "pollution incident" that effected the Sound and/or Sound life. Explore the sites also to find some 'travel' sites to visit. Find out why the Sound is so precious. Discover the wonderful marine plants and animals found in our Sound waters. Complete the worksheet requirements. Use the Resource Table below to find the information.

Phase 3. Create a Tri-Fold Brochure to inform your classmates about the effects of pollution on the Long Island Sound. Use the software program Microsoft Publisher to create your finished product. Spell check and proofread your work. Make it graphical and colorful. Use the Evaluation section before you print out your final copy.
